The Rotella Story

Founded by Roger Wright almost forty years ago the Rotella kennel is one of the most successful in the UK with many Champions & Top Winners  including the top winning bitch of all time.

Through painstaking adherence to breeding type, Rotella stock is without doubt the strongest northern (original) type in the world, having a virtually unbroken northern line which can be traced back to the first known WHW blood, that of Conas (grandsire of the 1st Cairn champion; Gesto, & great-grandsire of the 1st WHW champion; Morven).

Success has spanned four decades, the new millennium heralded with two new champions by Ch Rotella the Fezzant Plucka and perhaps we haven’t finished yet.

40 years hard work and perseverance to type is certainly paying dividends for many other kennels,  Karamynd in particular have reaped the benefits of Rotella. Their first three Champions; Tymeshare, Kasey Jones & Willie Makeit are all by my Ch Rotella The Fezzant Plucka, and everything else that has followed is through these bloodlines.

In the new millennium so far Ch Rotella The Fezzant Plucka has sired Top WHW Winner & Top WHW Puppy in 2000 and Top WHW Winner 2003, and there are a whole host of top winning descendants.

Rotella Foxy (Callum) & Rotella Victoria are just starting their new lives in Sweden with Ann & Mikael Jenebring. Callum was made a Champion in just 4 shows.

Still an avid exhibitor (he can often be seen showing various breeds for friends), Roger started showing his Min. Wire-Haired Dachshunds in July 2005. Three puppies were shown and all three; the bitch Rotella Never An Angel (Dottie), her sister; Rotella Sometimes An Angel (Dash), and brother Rotella De La Hoya (Oscar), qualified for Crufts first time out. All have gone on to do well with Oscar finishing 2005 as No. 5 Top Puppy and winning a RCC in 2006.  At Crufts 2006 Oscar was 2nd in Special Junior , Dash was 3rd in Special Yearling behind 2 champions, and Dottie won Special Junior – the biggest class of the day!

Roger spends more and more time judging - terriers in particular, but across the groups both in the UK and abroad. He is a Terrier Group Judge, has judged The WHWT Club of England Centenary Show and the 1st Black & White Show in Hungary. He was also the first UK breed specialist to judge  WHWT at The World Show 2008. In 2009 he judged terriers in both Denmark and Italy and in 2010 will judge at the World Festival of Terriers in Denmark.

He also writes on anything topically K9. His breed book West Highland White Terriers (published 1992) being accepted as the definitive modern work on the breed.

This web-site has been designed to give readers the opportunity to follow the Rotella story from the early 1970’s and into the new millennium. But don’t expect glam & glitz, some of the photo’s are just snapshots. "we didn’t bother about photo’s and top this, that and the other then". So much so in fact that some the "Top" awards weren’t realized until this site was being researched.

The dogs are shown on this site in decades to enable you to follow the Rotella Story from the beginning in the 70's to the present day. As you enter the decade you can select each dog individually. Details of each dog are shown together with photographs and pedigrees. I hope you enjoy this site. Please feel free to e-mail Roger on the link 'contact'.
