This was very much the formative decade. It is a proven fact that humans learn more in the period from birth to five years of age than at any other time. That is not to say that nothing more is learnt from thereon, for there is always more to learn and understand. So it is for anyone entering the world of pedigree dog exhibition and breeding.
From purchasing the first pet dog to joining the dog showing fraternity, learning about the breed, understanding the breed and learning how to handle and present, is a steep learning curve. Many struggle in one or more of the many component parts required for success.
I was very fortunate by not only, inadvertently, purchasing a reasonable first specimen, but also in coming into this new world when there were a great many highly skilled and knowledgeable stockmen-like people within the fancy, from which much could be learned.
So it was that during this decade much learning was done around the smaller shows in the first four or five years, before entering the heady world of Championship Shows. Winning CC’s with two dogs and a Junior Warrant with another, and laying good foundations for the future by linebreeding some excellent youngstock.
